Let's Talk About Death

Fabrizio Cocchiarella and John Lloyd

Death is universal, yet how we understand, experience and talk about it is shaped by culture, belief, place and personal experience. Let’s Talk About Death explores contemporary attitudes towards death, dying, burial and memorialisation, asking how creative practice might open up new ways of thinking about mortality. Through a combination of conversation, creative prompts and experiential practices, participants are invited to consider their own relationship with mortality alongside broader cultural and societal perspectives.

‘Let’s Talk About Death’ is a British Academy Leverhulme Small Grants project. This project aims to investigate and establish foundational research into how society understands and engages with death, dying and remembrance. Through public engagement in Greater Manchester and Lancashire, research aims to create inclusive and reflective physical and digital spaces where individuals can explore these issues through creative, participatory methods. A cross-faculty research project with researchers from the Department of Psychology, School of Digital Arts, School of Art and Design and external organisations. June 2026-28.
